Women and burnout: Tips for tackling silent exhaustion.

Have you ever felt like you're running an endless marathon, trying to juggle a thousand things at once? Imagine this: you wake up before the sun, prepare breakfast, drop the kids off at school, dive into an intense workday, and when you get home, the second shift begins. Dinner, homework, cleaning... and just when you think you can finally rest, you remember you forgot to send that important email. Sound familiar?

That exhaustion, which seems to consume every fiber of our being, has become an unwelcome companion for many women. But you’re not alone in this battle, and it's time to talk about it.

What is burnout?

Burnout, or the exhausted worker syndrome, is a condition that affects many people worldwide, but women, in particular, seem to face this challenge with a unique intensity.

42% of women worldwide are experiencing burnout, a significantly higher percentage than men, who stand at 35%. But why does it affect women more?

The answer lies in the invisible expectations society has placed on their shoulders. They are expected to be superheroines: successful at work, perfect mothers, attentive wives, and still maintain a radiant smile; it’s as if they constantly have to prove that they can handle everything.

The causes behind female burnout.

1. Social expectations and gender roles: Society has imposed the need for women to fulfill multiple roles. Not only are they expected to excel in their professional careers, but they are also expected to be the primary caregivers for their families and take on household responsibilities. This balance between work demands and domestic responsibilities can lead to extreme exhaustion.

2. Workplace disparities: Women still face significant inequalities at work, from pay gaps to a lack of promotion opportunities. Additionally, discrimination and workplace harassment remain a reality for many. These factors not only lead to emotional strain but also contribute to physical and mental exhaustion.

3. Emotional labor: Women often take on additional emotional work, both at home and at work. This "invisible work" includes managing emotions, showing empathy towards others, and nurturing relationships. Although it is neither recognized nor compensated, this labor can be incredibly exhausting and is a key factor in burnout.

4. Impact of the pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened these inequalities. Many women found themselves working from home while caring for children and taking on additional domestic responsibilities. The line between work and personal life became blurred, significantly increasing the risk of burnout.

But here’s the important part: we don’t have to accept this as "normal." It’s time to change the script.

Strategies to combat burnout.

Although the situation may seem discouraging, there are strategies women can implement to mitigate burnout and promote their well-being.

1. Set clear boundaries: It’s essential to establish work hours and set aside time for rest and recreation. Learning to say "no" and prioritizing self-care can make a big difference.

2. Seek support: Having a support network, whether it’s friends, family, or specific groups, provides a safe space to share experiences and receive advice. Don’t underestimate the power of talking and sharing your feelings.

3. Practice self-care: Investing time in activities that promote well-being, such as meditation, regular exercise, and hobbies you’re passionate about, is essential for maintaining emotional and physical balance.

4. Training and education: Participating in workshops on stress management and burnout can provide practical tools for handling challenging situations at work and in daily life.

5. Women’s health care: You should pay attention to the signals your body sends you. For example, if you notice changes in your menstrual cycles, fatigue, sleep disturbances, digestive problems, headaches, anxiety, or muscle tension, don’t hesitate to consult your trusted doctor. Remember, women’s health in relation to burnout requires a holistic approach. It’s important to recognize the symptoms and take immediate action.

Burnout is not a badge of honor, nor is it a sign that we’re working hard enough. It’s an alarm telling us that something in the system is broken, and we have the power to change it.
