What spices did the Incas use to improve fertility? Discover its ancestral secrets.

From time immemorial, different cultures have sought natural methods to enhance fertility. Among them, a fascinating civilization in the vast land of the Andes, the ancient Incas were not only masters in building impressive citadels and observing the stars, but they also had a deep understanding and their own secrets for promoting fertility. What was their trick? Something as common as spices!

Spices not only add flavor and fun to our meals, but they can also have health benefits, including fertility, and the Incas knew this well.

Here we tell you about those magical spices that were part of their rituals:

1. Maca: The jewel of the Andes.

Maca, scientifically known as Lepidium meyenii, was considered by the Incas as a sacred plant due to its properties to improve fertility and increase libido. This root, which grows in the heights of the Peruvian Andes, is rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fibers, and contains bioactive compounds that stimulate hormonal function and increase sperm production in men and ovarian quality in women. Today, maca is still widely used as a natural fertility enhancer.

2. Muña: The scent of fertility.

Muña (Minthostachys mollis) was another spice revered by the Incas for its medicinal properties, especially regarding reproductive health. This plant, belonging to the mint family and growing in the Andes mountains, was used in infusions to relieve menstrual pain, regulate the menstrual cycle, and improve fertility in general. In addition to its benefits for female health, muña was also considered a potent aphrodisiac, increasing sexual desire in both men and women.

3. Huacatay: The spice of life.

Huacatay (Tagetes minuta), also known as "black mint," was an aromatic herb widely used by the Incas in their cooking, but also in fertility-related rituals. This plant, which has an aroma similar to tarragon and mint, was believed to have mystical powers to favor conception and protect pregnant women. Today, huacatay remains a popular ingredient in Peruvian cuisine, especially in dishes like causa limeña and ají de gallina.

4. Chancapiedra: The stone-breaking plant.

Chancapiedra (Phyllanthus niruri) was a plant venerated by the Incas for its medicinal properties, especially in treating kidney stones and improving urinary tract health. Although its direct relationship with fertility is not as well documented as other spices, it is believed that its ability to detoxify the body and promote renal and bladder health could have indirectly contributed to improving overall fertility.
