Warning! Your skincare routine could harm your baby

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and its care is essential for our health and well-being. However, what many mothers do not know is that some beauty and personal care products might not be safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This article aims to inform about potentially dangerous ingredients found in skincare routines and how they can affect not only the mother but also the development and health of her baby.

Expecting a baby brings many changes; your body expands to make room for your little one, you feel different, and you even crave foods you didn't like before! But one change you probably didn't expect is the transformation your skin undergoes.

Pregnancy can bring changes in pigmentation, extreme dryness, and even acne. But don't worry, with the right beauty routine, you can keep your skin radiant and healthy while expecting your baby.

Before panicking and throwing away all your beauty products, according to recent studies, many common skincare ingredients are safe for pregnancy in normal usage amounts.

However, some harsh chemicals could pose a potential risk to the baby, such as causing irritation or skin problems in the baby, and can also cause neurological damage during its development or even congenital malformations

Which ingredients should you avoid during pregnancy?

While waiting for your little miracle, it's important to be aware of what you apply to your skin, as the largest organ of the human body and it acts like a sponge, so everything you apply can reach the bloodstream. Some ingredients you should avoid include:

  • Retinoids:  Retinoids, such as retinol, are vitamin A derivatives common in anti-wrinkle and acne treatments. However, they can be dangerous for fetal development, as studies have shown that exposure to retinoids can cause congenital malformations. Therefore, it's better to opt for natural alternatives like bakuchiol, a plant compound that offers similar benefits without risks.

  • Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is another popular ingredient in acne products. In high concentrations, it can be absorbed by the skin and enter the bloodstream, which is not safe during pregnancy. Instead, use products with glycolic acid or lactic acid, which are safer and also effective for keeping the skin clean and blemish-free.

  • Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. Most studies and experts indicate that when applied topically, only a small amount is absorbed through the skin, minimizing the risk to the baby.

But not all news is bad! There is a wide range of safe and effective products you can use during pregnancy. Look for those containing natural and gentle ingredients, such as aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and vegetable oils.

Here are some practical tips for radiant skin and a healthy pregnancy:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: This compound is wonderful for maintaining skin hydration. It has no known adverse effects and is very effective in keeping the skin soft and smooth, especially useful for combating dryness and tightness many women experience during pregnancy.

  • Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant that helps protect and repair the skin, is safe to use during pregnancy and can help prevent stretch marks. It helps maintain the skin's elasticity and hydration, promoting healthy skin.

  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera is excellent for soothing and repairing irritated skin and is completely safe for you and your baby. This gel contains over 75 active components, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants, contributing to its multiple health benefits.

  • Moisturizer: To avoid stretch marks, reduce itching, and soothe dry skin, use and abuse moisturizer. Apply it all over your body, especially on your belly, elbows, and knees, which tend to dry out even more. If you can, choose chemical-free products formulated with natural ingredients, especially designed for pregnancy, such as cocoa butter we talked about earlier in Coconut butter: one of the most hydrating ingredients on the planet

  • Never forget your SPF (Sun Protection Factor): Now your skin is more sensitive to the sun, and you produce more melanin than usual. This combination can cause pigmentation or dark spots on your face or even in body folds, like your neck or armpits. Therefore, it is super important to apply high sun protection and complement it with hats and sunglasses.

Additional tips for safe skincare:

  • Consult your gynecologist: Always consult your gynecologist before using new skincare products during pregnancy. At Mater Clinic, our specialists are available to guide you every step of the way.

  • Read the labels: Make sure to read the labels and avoid products with dangerous ingredients. Look for products labeled as safe for pregnancy.

  • Keep a simple routine: You don't need a complicated routine to take care of your skin. Focus on cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection.

So remember, your skincare routine can influence your pregnancy, but there is no need to panic. With a little knowledge and caution, you can continue caring for your skin while expecting your little treasure, and it is always best to seek professional help when it comes to something as important as your baby's health.
