"The planet will empty of people due to low birth rates, according to National Geographic."

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if there were fewer people?

Historically, we have witnessed explosive population growth, driven by the Industrial Revolution and advances in medicine and technology. In the 10th century, the world population was estimated to be approximately 275 to 300 million people. By the 18th century, the global population had grown significantly, estimated at 650 to 800 million people. The 19th century experienced unprecedented demographic growth, with the world population reaching approximately 1,000 to 1,700 million, largely due to the expansion of the Industrial Revolution. The 20th century witnessed the most significant demographic explosion in human history, with the global population increasing from approximately 1.65 billion to over 6 billion by the year 2000. And by the end of 2022, we had already surpassed the 8 billion mark.

However, things are going to start changing. According to a recent study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, we could soon see deaths outnumbering births in most countries, marking the beginning of a gradual decline in the global population.

This change, though surprising, brings challenges that we must face together. It forces us to reflect on how to adapt to a future where we will be fewer in number.

According to projections, by the year 2050, most countries will face fertility rates insufficient to maintain their current populations, and by the end of the century, almost all will experience demographic decline. This will not only alter our population pyramids but also have profound economic, social, and environmental implications.

Impact on society.

- Change in demographic structure: With a decreasing population, the age structure would change significantly. We could see an aging population, with a higher proportion of elderly people and fewer young people. This would have important implications for elder care and the labor market.

- Culture and community: Small and rural communities could face significant challenges, with fewer people to maintain traditions and community cohesion. However, this could also lead to a cultural renaissance, where smaller, tight-knit communities rediscover and value their unique identities.

- Innovation and creativity: Fewer people would mean less labor, and therefore less creativity and innovation. We could see a decrease in collaboration and the quality of innovations, as people would have less time and resources to dedicate to creative and scientific projects.

- Quality of life: Fewer people could translate into greater availability of natural resources and less pressure on the environment. This could improve the quality of life, with more green spaces, less pollution, and better resource management.

But it's not all rosy; fewer people in the world would mean fewer young people to care for the elderly, and a declining population could translate into a reduced workforce, affecting productivity and economic growth.

Impact on the economy.

- Labor market: A declining population can lead to a labor shortage, especially in sectors that require specific skills. Companies would compete to attract and retain workers.

- Pension and social security systems: With a larger proportion of elderly people, pension and social security systems would face increased pressure. It would be crucial to reform these systems to ensure their long-term sustainability, possibly by diversifying funding sources and promoting individual savings.

- Consumption and demand: Fewer people means fewer consumers, which could negatively impact businesses that rely on large markets.

In light of this scenario, it is essential that we start preparing. This involves government policies that support families in raising children, strategic planning that considers potential threats to the economy, innovations in technology and medicine that can improve the quality of life in an aging world, and healthcare systems that must adapt to an aging population. This will entail greater demands for long-term care and an increase in the prevalence of age-related diseases.
