The legend of pumpkins and beans under the moon: A Chinese fertility ritual.

In ancient Chinese traditions, fertility was deeply connected to nature and the beliefs that governed daily life. Among the many customs aimed at strengthening the bond between humans and their environment, one of the most curious and enchanting is the ritual of pumpkins and beans, a practice that evoked the desire for motherhood under the light of the moon. This ritual was celebrated during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a festivity that coincided with the full moon, a symbol of fullness, fertility, and hope.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. This event marks the harvest season, a time when nature bears its fruits, and the moon reaches its brightest point, symbolizing fullness and the cycle of renewal. For many families, this festival was not only a moment to give thanks for the good harvests, but also an opportunity to ask for prosperity and, especially, for the gift of motherhood.

Among married women who had not yet had children, there was a deep desire to become mothers, something reflected in the fertility-related rites. During the night of the festival, a special ritual took place in which childless women, accompanied by sisters or friends, participated in a very particular practice: the secret gathering of pumpkins and beans.

The ritual: A symbolic act of hope:

Although this act might seem like theft at first glance, tradition dictated that women would discreetly visit the fields of other farmers to “steal” pumpkins and beans. However, far from being frowned upon, the farmers welcomed these visits with joy, believing that the "theft" brought good luck and blessings to everyone, as this act represented a fertility ritual, where the symbolism of the harvested fruits was directly connected to motherhood.

It was believed that by touching a pumpkin, the woman would soon give birth to a baby boy. The symbolic connection lay in the fact that, in Chinese, the first characters of the words "pumpkin" and "child" are the same, creating a strong link between the fruit and the birth of a son.

Similarly, if the woman touched the beans, it was believed she would give birth to a baby girl. The beans, with their delicate and small shape, represented beauty and feminine characteristics, especially a girl's eyebrows, a symbol of beauty and softness in Chinese culture.

This ritual was not merely a superstition but a manifestation of hope and faith in nature, at a time when women looked to their surroundings for the power to fulfill their deepest desire: to become mothers.

The evolution of customs and modern society:

Over the centuries and with the evolution of Chinese society, many of these practices have disappeared or been reinterpreted. However, the legend of the pumpkins and beans under the moon remains a cultural reminder of how, throughout history, women have connected their desire for motherhood with the cycles of nature. Although these practices are no longer common, their essence lives on in the stories passed down from generation to generation.

Today, the desire to become a mother remains as powerful as it was in ancient legends. Although rituals and customs have changed, the longing to have children endures. Instead of relying solely on the symbolism of nature, today's women have the help of science and modern medicine to fulfill their dreams of motherhood.
