Silent pregnancy: when you don't know you're pregnant, what are the symptoms?

Is it possible for a woman not to know she is pregnant until she is in an advanced stage, or even until delivery? The answer is yes, and this condition is known as cryptic or silent pregnancy.

What is a cryptic pregnancy?

A cryptic pregnancy occurs when a woman is unaware of her pregnancy until very advanced stages, or in some cases, until the moment of delivery. This type of pregnancy goes unnoticed not only by the woman herself, but also by those around her.

This kind of pregnancy can be confusing and unsettling, as women who experience it do not show typical pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or noticeable weight changes. In fact, it’s possible for the belly size to barely increase, and the absence of menstruation may be attributed to other factors.

But, how is it possible not to identify a pregnancy? The answer is complex and may involve both physical and psychological factors. Conditions such as obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or premature ovarian insufficiency can disrupt the menstrual cycle and make it harder to detect fetal movement.

Additionally, fear of pregnancy may lead to denial of the gestation as a psychological defense mechanism. This denial, however, can have serious consequences for both the mother and the baby, as necessary precautions and care are not taken.

Why is it important to detect it?

The greatest risk of silent pregnancy lies in the lack of prenatal care. A pregnancy without medical monitoring can lead to:

•Developmental issues in the baby, such as low birth weight or prematurity.

•Severe maternal complications, such as hemorrhaging during delivery, eclampsia, or infections.

•Inappropriate habits during pregnancy, such as alcohol or tobacco consumption, which increase risks for the fetus.

In extreme cases, lack of preparation for childbirth can result in critical situations for both the mother and the newborn.

Tips and recommendations.

A cryptic pregnancy reminds us of the importance of listening to our bodies and seeking medical attention for any change, no matter how minor it may seem. If you are a woman of reproductive age, sexually active, and experience:

•Subtle changes in your body.

•Menstrual irregularities.

•Unusual physical sensations.

Consult your gynecologist. Do not hesitate to seek medical help. A specialist can provide you with personalized guidance and peace of mind.

A silent pregnancy reminds us of how incredibly diverse our bodily experiences can be. No two women are the same, and every journey toward motherhood is deeply personal.
