Menstruation without myths: What every teenager should know

Hello girls! If you are reading this, it’s because you are a curious teenager, ready to explore and understand the world around you, and that is fantastic! And since this stage, although wonderful, is also full of doubts, we want to help you understand some of them better. One such topic is something as natural as menstruation.

The first period or menstruation, also known as menarche, is an important moment in any teenager's life. It’s a natural cycle that marks a significant stage in a woman’s life, especially during adolescence when these entirely natural cycles begin.

Each month, the body typically prepares for a possible pregnancy, and if this does not occur, the lining of the uterus sheds and is expelled through the vagina. This is what we call menstruation, a process that usually starts between the ages of 10 and 15, although every body is different, so don’t worry about it.

Did you know that despite being so natural and older than all of us, there are still many myths that can confuse you?

Unfortunately, we are surrounded by countless myths and taboos that, despite scientific and educational advances, persist in popular culture. These beliefs, often rooted in ignorance and fear, have contributed to a distorted perception of this biological process, generating stigma and confusion. It is crucial to debunk these myths to foster a deeper and more respectful understanding of menstruation.

At Mater Gynecology, we know perfectly well that this is a new stage and, precisely for that reason, it is full of doubts. Often, these doubts can be a bit embarrassing to ask your parents or other adults, but it is completely normal to have them.

Therefore, we have taken on the task of compiling some very common questions or myths so that you have the information more easily at your fingertips. We will also leave you some tips.

1. The first period is always painful.

False, not all teenagers experience pain during their first menstruation and it also varies throughout their lives. Some may feel mild cramps, while others may not feel any discomfort at all. Menstrual cramps are usually more common in subsequent cycles.

Tip: If you experience mild cramps, try stretching exercises, applying a heating pad to your abdomen, or taking a mild pain reliever. Maintaining a regular exercise routine can help reduce the intensity of cramps in future cycles.

2. If you don’t have your period, you are not normal.

False! Menstruation is not the same for all girls. Some get it at 10 years old, others at 15. And that’s okay. If you haven't got it yet within that age range, don’t worry, there’s no rush; it will come in its own time. Remember, all bodies are different, and each woman is a different world.

Tip: If something about your menstrual cycle worries you, ask! At Mater Clinic, we are here to help you understand your body.

3. You can’t exercise during menstruation.

This is also false. Moderate exercise can relieve menstrual cramps and even improve your mood. It is safe and healthy to continue with your physical activities during your period. You can participate in activities you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, or practicing yoga. These activities can help you feel better and stay active during your menstruation.

Tip: If you don’t feel like exercising, that’s also fine. Don’t worry and do what makes you feel best.

4. Using tampons will make you lose your virginity or can cause health problems.

Nothing could be further from the truth! Virginity has nothing to do with using tampons. Tampons are simply an option to manage your menstruation comfortably and safely. If you feel ready to use them, go ahead! Additionally, tampons are safe when used correctly. You should learn how to insert and remove tampons properly to avoid discomfort.

Tip: It is important to change them every 4-8 hours and choose the appropriate absorption level for your flow. Always wash your hands before and after handling a tampon and change it regularly to maintain good hygiene.

5. You can’t swim during menstruation.

False, although the biggest fear is bleeding and it being noticeable, the solution is that you can swim during your period using tampons or menstrual cups, which will allow you to enjoy the water without worries.

Tip: Make sure to use a tampon or menstrual cup and change it regularly. If you feel more comfortable, you can also wear a dark-colored swimsuit.

6. Eating lemon or acidic foods can reduce or stop menstrual flow.

7. The normal cycle lasts 28 days; if it’s not, something is wrong.

False, remember that all bodies are different, and all women are different. For this reason, the menstrual cycle cannot be the same for everyone.

It is normal for it to last between 21 to 35 days. When a woman begins her menstrual cycles after the first period, the cycles can be irregular, even up to a year after their start. So if this is your case, don’t worry, it can be normal.

Tip: If you think something is not right or something worries you again, don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional.

8. If you are menstruating and make mayonnaise, it will curdle.

False, this belief is linked to the “impurity” during menstruation. Both are entirely unfounded.

Tip: There is nothing wrong with menstruating; it is a completely normal and natural process in all women. Freeing ourselves from the belief that there is something impure or wrong is the first step to accepting our bodies as they are, and it is obviously the first step to improving our relationship with ourselves.

Here are some more tips:

  • Talk to someone you trust: Don’t hesitate to talk to your mother, older sister, or a friend who has already gone through this. Sharing your concerns and questions can help you feel more at ease.

  • Prepare a menstrual kit: Carry a small bag with pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, as well as an extra pair of underwear. This will make you feel more prepared and secure.

  • Maintain good hygiene: Change your menstrual products regularly and maintain good intimate hygiene to avoid infections.

  • Listen to your body: Every body is different. If you experience severe pain or any unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to consult a gynecologist. At Mater Clinic, we are here to help you.

  • Keep a menstrual diary: Although it may sound silly, recording your cycles can help you understand your body better and detect any irregularities in time. It can even help you understand how you feel at each moment of your cycle.

We also leave you some common questions that you might be wondering:

How long does the first menstruation last?

The duration of the first menstruation can vary but generally lasts between 3 and 7 days.

Is it normal to have an irregular cycle at first?

Yes, it is common for menstrual cycles to be irregular during the first years. Your body needs time to adjust.

Lastly, demystifying menstruation is essential for all teenagers to feel comfortable and confident during this stage of their life. By debunking these myths, we promote a positive and healthy attitude towards menstruation, contributing to better physical and emotional well-being.
