Does your discharge speak? What it says about your health and fertility.

Your body has unique ways of communicating with you, and one of the most important is through changes in your vaginal discharge.

Vaginal discharge is something that accompanies us throughout our lives. Sometimes abundant, other times scarce, with different shades and textures, but always fulfilling its fundamental role: protecting us and providing signals about our intimate health and, in many cases, indicating our most fertile moments.

Among all the messages our discharge sends us, its smell and consistency are two of the most revealing. It can be subtle or more intense, change in texture, but it should never be ignored.

How can you learn to decode what it’s telling you? Let’s discover It together.

A natural and normal scent

Healthy vaginal discharge has a mild odor that can vary depending on the menstrual cycle, diet, and even underwear. Its appearance also changes throughout the month, providing key clues about ovulation and fertility.

During the ovulatory phase, discharge tends to become more abundant, clear, and stretchy, similar to egg white. This type of mucus helps sperm move more easily, increasing the chances of conception.

Its odor is not unpleasant, but rather a natural body scent, influenced by the balance of beneficial bacteria that protect the intimate area.

It’s important to know that the vagina does not need perfumes or strongly scented products to "smell good." Its natural scent is part of its healthy function. However, when there is a noticeable change, it’s time to pay attention.

Fertility Indicators.

Egg white-like discharge is the most reliable indicator of fertility.

Characteristics:

Stretchable between fingers (5-10 cm)m)

 Transparent and shiny

Slippery and lubricating

Appears 24–48 hours before ovulation

The ABCs of natural scents

It is normal for vaginal discharge to have a mild, characteristic odor that varies throughout the month. It can be:

Slightly acidic during ovulation.

Neutral or musky in the days leading up to menstruation.

Almost imperceptible after your period.

Odors that may indicate an imbalance.

Some odors can be warning signs that something is out of balance. Here’s a basic guide:

- Strong, acidic odor: This may be related to a change in vaginal pH. It sometimes occurs after unprotected sex or during ovulation.

-Metallic odor: Common after menstruation due to the iron in blood. If it persists beyond those days, it’s best to monitor for other symptoms.

- Fishy odor: This can be a sign of bacterial vaginosis, especially if accompanied by grayish or whitish, slightly foamy discharge. Consulting a specialist is important, as an untreated infection could affect cervical mucus quality and make conception more difficult.

- Sweet or fruity odor: Some yeast infections can produce a sweeter, fermented smell, similar to bread or yeast. If accompanied by itching or thick discharge, it could be candidiasis, which, in excess, may disrupt the vaginal ecosystem and impact fertility.

- Musty or moldy odor: This may indicate a buildup of sweat or lack of ventilation in the intimate area. Changing out of damp clothing and wearing cotton underwear can help.

Tips for healthy intimate hygiene.

Wear cotton underwear.

Avoid scented products in the intimate area.

Maintain gentle cleansing with water and mild soap.

Do not use vaginal douches—your vagina cleans itself.

When to see a specialist?

If your discharge suddenly changes odor, becomes very strong, or is accompanied by other symptoms like itching, irritation, pain, or changes in texture and color, it is advisable to see a gynecologist. Early diagnosis can prevent further discomfort and help maintain the natural balance of your intimate area and fertility.

Listen to your body.

Your body has its own language, and vaginal discharge is one way it communicates with you. Learning to interpret its signals is a way to take care of yourself and connect with your body. The key lies in observation, self-care, and remembering that your intimate well-being is an essential part of your overall and reproductive health.

So, the next time you notice a change in your discharge’s odor, instead of worrying in silence, observe it, listen to your body, and if needed, consult a specialist. Your intimate health is valuable and deserves your full attention and care.
