Can radiotherapy affect your sexuality and fertility?

If you are undergoing radiotherapy treatment, it is natural to have concerns about how it will affect your intimate life and your dreams of starting a family. Today, I want to share valuable information with you and offer some words of encouragement for the journey you are about to undertake.

Radiotherapy can have effects on your body that go beyond the treated area; but don't be discouraged, there are options and solutions!

This article aims to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions and take care of your well-being during this process.

Let's start by understanding, what is radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy, also known as radiation therapy, is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to destroy cancer cells and reduce tumors.

Impact of radiotherapy on sexuality and fertility.

Radiation can damage reproductive organs and cause early menopause, which may prevent you from becoming pregnant; additionally, a decrease in female hormone levels can affect sexual function and desire. It is common to experience vaginal dryness, itching, and burning, which can make sexual intercourse painful or difficult.

In case this happens, what can you do?

- If you experience vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex, you can use water-based lubricants to relieve the dryness. Avoid scented or colored lubricants, as they can cause irritation.

- If early menopause occurs, there are hormone therapies that can help with the symptoms. Hormone replacement medications can help you manage the symptoms of menopause induced by radiotherapy.

- If sex is uncomfortable or painful, explore other forms of intimacy with your partner. Communication and mutual support are key during these times.

And remember, if you notice changes in your body or sexual desire, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor.

What can you do before radiotherapy to protect your fertility?

Before starting treatment, it is crucial to have an honest conversation with your medical team about your future desires to become a mother, as there are wonderful options you might consider:

- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Eggs can be extracted and fertilized with sperm to create embryos, which are then frozen for future use. You can also choose to freeze unfertilized eggs.

- Ovarian Cryopreservation: This method involves the rapid freezing of mature eggs, preserving these cells for extended periods. This allows them to maintain their biological properties once thawed, thereby preserving the reproductive potential of women in the future.

It is important to note that the main difference between in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ovarian cryopreservation lies in what is preserved:

In IVF, already fertilized embryos are preserved. Mature eggs are extracted, fertilized with sperm in the laboratory, and the resulting embryos are frozen.

Whereas in ovarian cryopreservation, ovarian tissue containing immature eggs is preserved. There is no fertilization at this stage; a portion of the ovary with its intact follicles is extracted and frozen.

- Egg Donation: It is a fertility treatment that helps many women achieve pregnancy using eggs from an anonymous donor, combined with either the partner's or a donor's sperm.

After radiotherapy treatment, motherhood is possible in many cases thanks to this assisted reproduction method.

During radiotherapy treatment, it is important to use contraceptive methods to avoid pregnancy, as the radiation could affect the baby. But don't worry, this is temporary. Once the treatment is finished, with your doctor's approval, you can resume your plans for motherhood.

Emotional support and support groups.

Changes in sexual function and fertility can be emotionally challenging for both you and your partner; consider joining support groups or seeking therapy to manage these changes.

The most important thing is that you do not feel alone in this process. There are support groups and specialized therapists who can provide the emotional support you need. Your feelings are valid and deserve to be addressed.

When to contact your doctor?

It is important to be aware of certain symptoms and contact your doctor if:

- You experience new or increasing pain during or after sexual intercourse.

- You have vaginal bleeding during or after sexual intercourse.

- You notice changes in erectile function or in the amount of semen.

- You have any questions or concerns about your condition or treatment.
