Bad smell during menstruation, is it normal?

If you think your menstruation has a rather peculiar smell, you're not wrong! To be honest, there isn't a woman who claims her period smells like flowers. However, there are 'normal' smells and others that are not, and today we'll discuss both.

But wait! We want to tell you something before we start: that scent you perceive shouldn't worry you (at least not initially). Remember that menstrual flow isn't designed to smell like roses.

The smell during menstruation can vary from person to person, but it's generally described as a metallic or slightly sulfurous odor due to the presence of blood. However, if the smell is particularly strong, unpleasant, or different from what you usually experience, it could indicate an underlying problem that requires medical attention.

Some common causes of a strong or unpleasant smell during menstruation may include:

Infections: The presence of vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections, can cause an unpleasant smell during menstruation.

Menstrual flow retention: If menstrual flow is retained in the vagina for an extended period, it can start to develop a strong odor. This can happen if a sanitary pad or tampon is used for too long.

Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes can alter the natural balance of vaginal flora, which may contribute to a different odor during menstruation.

Personal hygiene: Lack of proper personal hygiene can lead to an increased odor during menstruation.

Unhealthy diets: Some foods can affect the odor of menstrual flow, especially those that are spicy, garlicky, oniony, among others.

It's important to note that a strong odor during menstruation isn't always a cause for concern, but if it's accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, irritation, severe abdominal pain, or changes in the color of the flow, it's recommended to consult a doctor.

Some characteristics that could indicate an abnormal bad odor during menstruation include:

Strong and unpleasant odor: The smell during menstruation is generally mild and metallic due to the presence of menstrual blood. However, if the smell is particularly strong, unpleasant, or perceived as different than usual, it could be a cause for concern.

Rotten fish odor: A smell resembling rotten fish could indicate the presence of a vaginal infection, such as bacterial vaginosis. This condition is characterized by an imbalance in the vagina's natural bacteria.

Acrid or rancid odor: An acrid or rancid odor during menstruation could be caused by the presence of retained blood in the vagina, which can occur if a sanitary pad or tampon is left in for a prolonged period.

Fishy odor: A smell similar to fish could indicate a vaginal infection, such as bacterial vaginosis. This condition is characterized by an imbalance in the vagina's natural bacteria.

Each person may experience menstruation differently, and odors may vary depending on factors such as diet, level of personal hygiene, and health conditions. However, if the odor during menstruation is persistent, unusual, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it's recommended to seek medical attention for proper evaluation and treatment.

What should your menstruation not smell like?

There are periods that smell more and others that smell less. As you've seen before, it all depends on your lifestyle, the menstrual protection method you use, and the time it takes for menstruation to come.

However, there are smells of smells, and in menstrual matters, the smell of rotten fish sets off alarms! If you perceive a foul smell during your period, you need to see a doctor because it's a clear indication that something is wrong.

You could be facing bacterial vaginosis. An abnormal growth of bacteria in the vaginal area could lead to a rather annoying infection that, in addition to producing the foul odor during menstruation, causes burning when urinating, itching, swelling, and irritation.

Or perhaps facing any other vaginal infection. Generally, any vaginal infection exacerbates the foul odor during menstruation. To avoid infections, we recommend using hypoallergenic and breathable underwear or better yet, a good menstrual panty. Our collection will fit you like a glove because, in addition to caring for your vagina, it will keep you protected during spotting, vaginal discharge, and menstruation.

How to "improve" the smell of menstruation?

Menstrual flow has its own odor and, despite being a bit intense, it's natural. However, some practices could make it worse. Prevent it by following this pair of tips:

  • Avoid vaginal douches. Opt instead for washing the intimate area with a neutral pH soap.

  • Change pads or tampons frequently. That is, every three hours. This will prevent the bad odor from getting worse.

  • Use breathable underwear. Perspiration matters, a lot! We recommend using 100% cotton garments.

  • Change your diet. Consuming fruits, vegetables, and probiotics - such as Greek yogurt - keeps vaginal fungi and bacteria at bay. Try to include them in your diet whenever you can!

  • Drink enough water. Stay well-hydrated by drinking enough water during your period. This can help dilute menstrual flow and reduce odor.

  • Evita las duchas vaginales. Decántate mejor por lavar la zona íntima con un jabón de pH neutro.
